Collaboration

Collaboration
Music KVpop, Words Tom Ferguson, Editing/Remix Killer Haven

Musical composer extraordinaire KVpop provides musical compositions for painter and political cartoonist Tom Ferguson whose role in the collaboration was to add words. Sorting through his stack of lyric sheets he’d find something that might fit the musical structure and try it out. Sometimes the song duration or changes within it required marrying one or more songs and nipping and tucking in other ways. Once lyrics were selected and synced into the structure he would record them, then send a file of just the vocals back. Killer Haven would tweak them with secret and magical processes so they’d dwell in an optimal place in the music, make whatever changes to the music the new context seemed to suggest and voila, a hit. They did this 15 times for the collection here released to an expectant multitude of undetermined number.

Two of the pieces titled, Farewell and Silvery Sacrosanct, had words written for them rather than borrowing from existing songs. Tom got the idea, when hearing Priscilla Smith singing at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery, to invite her to sing on Farewell, which she did to great effect.

It’s always better to listen to rather than talk about music but sometimes it’s nice to have lyrics handy so the titles and lyrics are provided in a document file.

SWITCH

well, Jeff Rackley has posted work from the ongoing series SWITCH on ReverbNation. It has been an extreme pleasure to contribute playing to this fine series, and Jeff has done a great job of stitching together material from so many different sources. Check it out, and I know Jeff would love to hear any comments you may have about it.

Killer Haven vs. The Burning Artist pt. 4-7

in anticipation of The Burning Artist's return to performance, here are the next installments of my most recent project.  Burning Artist will be joining Jim Combs and Klimchak at Kavarna on September 6th.  I note that September 6th will be the 23rd anniversary of the first Destroy All Music Festival, a historic date in the Burning Artist(s) Sale story.

Killer Haven vs. The Burning Artist

I'm posting the first three installments of a new project.  If interested in subscribing to my new comic series, please drop me a line.  But remember that it is the stated policy of Burning Artist(s) Sale to NEVER do requests.  Anatomically incorrect suggestions will be ignored.

update(s)

Almost six months since my last post. And what have I to show for all that time? Well I'll let you in on a couple of things that I can tell you about.

Killer Haven bought a used Fender Stratocaster (red) that he hasn't played much. He's made himself far too busy editing (and co-producing) a video of 86's Finale performance at the METROPLEX in March of 1988. The footage has been synced to the soundboard tape, and effects and flourishes are being added (seemingly daily). Selections will be compiled into a disc that we hope to have on offer for the METROPLEX Reunion Show in early October. Killer Haven reports that SEVERAL suggestions have been made that 86 play the show. Best guess as of this writing is that 86 will NOT play the show, but alternatives are being considered.

here's the most recent edit with effects of the song Minutes In A Day...

Burning Artist is busy preparing for his trip out to Arcosanti in September for the Different Skies Space Music Festival. He is looking forward to time out of town, and especially excited to be spending a week concentrating on the craft of performing. For more info on the event...

www.differentskies.com

But before he heads out of town, he will host/moderate EYEDRUM's First Thursday Open Improv on September 4th.  He will be standing in for Robert Cheatham, as baby Cheatham is due to arrive that week.

The Stan Satin Thread - a past due 25th anniversary blog

November 13th, 1982... The significance of that date to me, which binds such seemingly disparate persons.

But first... It was through my association with the band DESIGN that I became aware of Stan Satin in about 1980-81. Stan shared rehearsal space with the band, but I never met or saw him play music during that period of time. Which is slightly ironic since his girlfriend owned/operated TV Dinners, one of the coolest bars within crawling distance of ACA. Perhaps I did see VieTNam and just don't remember. I vaguely remember seeing Helicopter Shampoo, a descendant group, at a Pilotex Halloween party, but this was a couple/few years later.

November 13th, 1982, Stan had by now joined The Method Actors, who were "just another band from Athens" before I saw them. I was impressed with the power and simplicity of their music. I spent most of that evening falling in love with, and silently dancing with a blonde. Unbeknownst to me was the fact that her boyfriend was also there recording/bootlegging the show. When that blonde gave me a kiss before leaving for the night, I determined to return to 688 the next week and find her. And I did. When she asked if I'd like to attend a party after the show, I was only too happy to go. When we arrived, I quickly assessed that the party was for the band that had just played at 688. And that blonde had been going out with the guitarist. I also realized that the bass player's girlfriend was a classmate and friend to my girlfriend at ACA, the girl whose heart I was breaking, as I went straight to her room that previous Saturday and told her of my plan to find the blonde. The Band that played 688 on that following Saturday was 86.

Sometime in the early 90's, I finally met Stan, working on the show floor of the GWCC (after the guitarist for 86 married the vocalist from my first band and moved to New Orleans).

About a year ago it was my honour to share the stage with both Stan and Ken when the Amalgamated Cliff Divers played eyedrum. Shortly after Ken joined and continues to play with Stan's VieTNam.

sad news

Jennifer was a neighbor until her addiction necessitated an interdiction. We recognized a humanity in each other. A rare thing for her. She was very distant and I sensed the demons that she lived with. In the intervening years since her departure from Atlanta, I've often wondered how she was. Today I received a Christmas card from her mother with the enclosed obit. My deepest condolences to all that loved her.

happy turkey day

Just got done with an early Thanksgiving dinner over at the church. Gosh, the people I've met there sure are nice. I thought I'd take this opportunity to fill in a couple of missing links to "The Burning Artist(s) Sale Story". Life in the bunker has been good, if not spectacular. Several projects are in the pipeline, and it seems as though several potentials have started to be considered and discusssed.

I'd like to thank those that made it out to the viewing of the piece that BV and I did for the DEAD FLOWERS show at EYEDRUM. I'd like to thank Anne & Klimchak especially for their ongoing support of most everything I've done. Their's is the type of encouragement that sustains an often lonely career.

here's the imbed of the recent work by BV and KH..

I'm also working on a blog that commemorates the 25th anniversary of my meeting the 86 boys...

random report

We've been busy in the bunker. Killer Haven has been working on tracks for remakes of songs first written in the eighties. He also did a video with BV for inclusion in a video screening in conjuction with the recent show DEAD FLOWERS at EYEDRUM. Just heard it got accepted, so I'll post it to YouTube or MySpace after the viewing. Burning Artist has been taking a break from performing while he works on several different websites. Among the projects in the pipeline are the Public Domain legacy archive and The Burning Artist(s) Sale homepage. Hopefully these will be ready for public viewing by the new year.

Both Killer Haven and KVpop have tried their hand at mixing down the Random Violets multi-tracks from the EYEDRUM show. It still remains to be seen if RV will secure another gig before Killer Haven forgets how to play the songs.

one down, one to go...

Killer Haven thoroughly enjoyed himself during Random Violets premiere at EYEDRUM last night. Thanks go out to EYEDRUM for hosting. For booking & promotions, Stan, Serson, and Nathan. For creating the material, Rich Helinger, Max Koshewa, (and Ken Schenck). For allowing me to share the stage with them, Max Force Ten, Cutfinger, & The Wrench Wench. For sharing the bill, VieTNam, The Subliminator, & Tree Creature. And especially ALL the friends that made it out to be in the audience (it's been a while since KH has encountered such enthusiastic responses).
