one down, one to go...

Killer Haven thoroughly enjoyed himself during Random Violets premiere at EYEDRUM last night. Thanks go out to EYEDRUM for hosting. For booking & promotions, Stan, Serson, and Nathan. For creating the material, Rich Helinger, Max Koshewa, (and Ken Schenck). For allowing me to share the stage with them, Max Force Ten, Cutfinger, & The Wrench Wench. For sharing the bill, VieTNam, The Subliminator, & Tree Creature. And especially ALL the friends that made it out to be in the audience (it's been a while since KH has encountered such enthusiastic responses).

The Return Of Random Violets
a (semi) fiction by The Burning Artist

Last century, shortly before Atlanta's olympic fever, Random Violets formed around the core of Max Force 10's guitar and voice, Killer Haven's bass, and The Bob's drumming. A werning, churning mix of pop, funk, and power trio sounds emanated from the basement of joy and anguish. Just as circumstances seemed right to move out of the basement, and into public, it all ended in utter silence. All parties moved to other projects, ambitions, and locales.

About five years ago Killer Haven and Max Force 10 reconnected and even played music together on occasion. MF-10 was entangled in a band of his making, sharing guitar, singing, and song writing duties with one Cut Finger. Meanwhile Killer had fallen in with the Grand Conductor of Improv's sphere of influence. About one year ago Killer asked about, and coordinated, a return to the long lost art of Cliff Diving. A reunion and a couple of public Dives were held, and inevitably, processes were set into motion. Long dormant musical inclinations arose in surprising ways.

In casual conversation with Sir SatinStan of VieTNam, Killer enquired about the possibility of sharing another bill with Cliff Diving and Sir Stan's fine ensemble of Atlanta80s All-Stars. Unbeknownst to Killer, the gig was booked, AND expanded with two more acts. A sudden realization occurred to Killer that this was not a gig for Diving Off Cliffs. Thinking fast, Killer invited the aforementioned Entangled song writing duo and engaged The Wrench Wench (WW to her friends) for drumming duties.

This grouping would honour the commitment Killer had made to performing, but what material and instrumentation was yet to be determined. A quick move to bass by Max Force 10 facilitated a move to keys by Killer Haven. These moves suggested an opening to a wealth of legacy material, none of which was developed by/available to the original trio in the 90's. A crash course in chord changes and development of "set ready" sounds has characterized Killer Haven's keyboard acculturation activities. The material has developed into a set of songs that Killer Haven is proud and happy to be playing. His only wish is that adrenaline doesn't impede his ability to play the material honourably. I know he'd love to see people come out and enjoy hearing these songs, some of them again.

GFE @ EYEDRUM September 30 with Konk Pack and Don Hassler

Konk Pack, GFE, & Don Hassler
9:00PM
Price: $8

Konk Pack is:
Tim Hodgkinson (London) flat guitar, electronics, clarinet and alto saxophone;
Thomas Lehn (Cologne) analogue synthesizer;
Roger Turner (London) drumsets and percussion

konk pack is a hardcore trio made up of world class improvisers tim hodgkinson (henry cow, the work, god, etc.), thomas lehn (music in movement electronic orchestra, and has also worked with eugene chadbourne, the klangräumer, paul lovens, shabotinski, radu malfatti, gerry hemingway, günter christmann, evan parker, etc. - "probably the world's best synthesizer player", jim o'rourke) and roger turner (who has worked with john russell, hugh davies, alan silva, phil minton, john butcher, comforts of madness, steve beresford, evan parker, derek bailey, cecil taylor)

"The accelerated, interactive electronica of Roger Turner (percussion), Tim Hodgkinson (deconstructed tabletop guitar) and Thomas Lehn (analogue synth) arises from a scintillating heap of sonic detritus the way an artificial intelligence manifests itself in a Manga movie: a writhing mass of automobiles, arcade consoles, street furniture and mobile phones. Hodgkinson attacks his amplified strings with plectrum and bow, his specs glinting as he waits for the right awkward moment to kloodge a sonic shard on the side of one of Turner's amazingly vocalised motifs (at times you swear you hear collaborator Phil Minton's musical snorts). Lehn restricts his pianism on analogue synth to pinched blurts, but still manages to resemble a switched-on Liszt. Although we itched to interrupt with applause, Konk Pack played an unbroken 45 minute set: fun debris, rollicking freakouts ... and one magical section of scrape and pling where the music seemed to play itself."
- Ben Watson The Wire, UK (April 2001)

GFE:
Jeff Bradley - double bass
Scott Burland - pedal steel guitar
Rob Cheatham - saxophones, keyboards, voice
Kevin Haller - guitar/synth
Bob Hulihan - electronics & knives
Milton Jones - percussion
John Lowther - turntables, voice
(or some variation thereof)

"Atlanta's GFE plays a vast and spacious blend of improvised rock and far-out jazz. Each number expands and contracts with celestial majesty and psychedelic power while clusters of rhythm and melody disassemble themselves in a haze of droning sonic clutter that's sometimes calm and sometimes chaotic."
- Chad Radford, Creative Loafing

Don Hassler has been around the Atlanta Underground Scene, supporting various soon-to-be stars back in the 80's. He was the Rep for EMS (think of the VCS3 or the Synthi) for a while, but he has recently opted for a Buchla controller. Whatever he does, I'm looking forward to this rare treat.
